UFC Purchases Strikeforce

The UFC has purchased Strikeforce on March 12, 2011 for an undisclosed amount of money. According to UFC president Dana White, the UFC will honor all current contracts that fighters have with Strikeforce. He also said that Strikeforce will operate separately from the UFC and continue to do the shows on ShoweTime. It will be “business as usual” so the UFC doesn’t plan on making any changes to how Strikeforce operates. As to why Strikeforce sold out in the first place, it could be a number of reasons which may include investors wanting a return on their investment. A number of MMA companies have failed in the past several years and there was probably some worry of this happening to Strikeforce in the future.
Dana White has stated recently that “woman will never fight in the UFC” so one has to wonder just how committed the UFC will be towards expanding woman’s MMA. It appears at least so far that this will be good overall for the sport of MMA and for Strikeforce in general. Scott Coker will remain with Strikeforce so ultimately he will make the call on which fights he wants promote so Gina Carano along will other woman fighters will a part of Strikeforce’s future.
