Ginas Odds for Success in 2011

Posted by: Jen on January 18, 2011

Fans have been more than eager to see the blisteringly beautiful vixen that is Gina Carano return to action since her TKO defeat over a year ago. With beauty to spare and, when at her best, unmatched brain-stomping ability, Gina wins hearts and minds like few fighters in the world (in any venue) ever have.

But don’t get this mistaken. This isn’t a news piece. We’ve all heard that Gina will probably return to Strikeforce in 2011 in order to drill a hole in some unlucky girl’s chin. This is about the o/u and overall odds on how well she will do.

With countless magazine spots and even a Hollywood blockbuster to be released wherein Gina costars alongside Michael Douglas, she certainly doesn’t need to return to MMA. And in terms of who she would fight when she does come back, that’s also up in the air.

Sure, we could speculate, but that doesn’t do a bit of good. It’s better to focus on the quality of opponent and the projections of how Gina would perform.

A betting person might be inclined to say that Gina would be 3:1 to win any fight in 2011, regardless of her first opponent back. Why the low odds? Well, some are convinced that they’ll throw a poodle in the ring with a pit bull in order to give the fans a show and to give Gina an easy ride.

However, this isn’t Carano’s style. She’s a warrior, not a Lennox Lewis dodging Tyson until after a prison stint, two give-ups and three retirements. You can bet that Gina will not face a marshmallow in her return. Take that to the bank with a solid 5:3 – better odds than you find at slots online or with any other sport.

A rematch with Cristiane Santos is probably out of the question for 2011. We’ll call it a 40:1 long shot, 100:1 if Gina can’t knock her first opponent out. For 2012, though, assuming Carano can win her comeback in convincing fashion, proving she hasn’t lost a step nor the passion to compete, don’t be surprised to hear tale about a rematch. We’ll give that 12:1.

Any way you slice it, it’s a gamble to predict Gina’s next move. If you want a bet with more security, try baccarat online or even Russian roulette! Judging how a fighter is going to react to outside success and stardom is like trying to guess how many toothpicks spilled out on the floor. Are you Dustin Hoffman? No, we didn’t think so.

Some even assert that it was Gina’s “Crush” success and worldwide sexy idol status that softened her up in the first place and allowed Santos to put the brakes on her so early.

If anything here is a sure bet, it’s that Carano will eventually look to quash that hogwash by letting the fists O’fury fly all over some poor chick’s face. We just want to see it when it happens.

i say odds 2 to 1 she fights in 2011

I think her next opponent will be Erin Toughill if she can make weight. She was scheduled to fight in Strikeforce a few times at 145, but was unable to due to weight and medical issues. However, she is technically still signed with Strikeforce. If you recall, Erin was “Steel” in the second season of the new American Gladiators which could make for an interesting angle.

Should Toughill have problems making it to the fight, I think Gina will go up against Jan Finney. Both potential opponents are known bangers and would make an exciting fight. Problem is though is that aside from Toughill, there are not many female fighters that Gina can fight who is her size. The 145lb division in SF is primarily made up of Santos, Toughill, and Carano and SF has often made fighters balloon up from 135lbs in order to fight these women.

I doubt Erin would fight Gina. Erin talks about fighting just about everyone else, but Gina. Gina should fight Julia Budd or Shana Olsen when she comes back.

I like Toughill after one comeback fight at least. Everything seems to be a contender fight for Cyborg shy of Nunes saying she doesnt want Cyborg yet (despite the fact that she had the same number of fight as G & Cyborg) I hope SF builds up the return of these two feMMA pioneers (w/ G its a mainstream one) and ex-gladiators, then let them fight. I’ve heard speculation that all the multiple delays for Toughill was all posturing so she could fight the ‘movie star’ after a tough loss and a long layoff. It’s quite feasible imo.

Finney’s a good choice, even Shana Olsen, who was one of Toughill’s intended comeback opponents. Toughill can fight Budd (how long is KO the supsension?) or that M1 judoka who upset Coenen (dec. robbed really)

They just gotta matchmake a bit better to avoid these weight disparities. They even had some glorified lighter fems posing as 135lbers in that last tourney.

She would probably fight Shana Olsen, Amanda Nunes, and Julia Budd.
I don’t think Erin can make 145lbs without cutting off a limb.

  • mkygod

Julia Budd would be a good one i think. Can’t believe I didn’t think of her. She is the only person to beat Gina Carano in a muay thai match.

  • mkygod

Ooh, I just remembered how bad Budd did in her bout with Nunes. Man that was not a good showing… I guess scratch her off the list for now. Nunes would be a good fight for Carano, but it looks like she will get a crack at Santos before that happens.

  • Gina Carano Fan

No Budd is still a better fight for Gina than Nunes. Nunes is planning on going back to 135lbs anyway. Budd like Gina is a true 145lbs fighter. Plus it gives Gina a chance to avenage one of her loses.

  • GCFan

Julia is still a worthy and dangerous oppenent. She just got caught by Nunes.
Nunes said in an interview that she wants to fight Gina. I guess they all do, lol…

  • Gina Carano Fan

Nunes would probably rather fight Gina than Cyborg. More people would tune into see that.

  • Nate

I doubt she’ll make weight. If she does.. then yea my money is on her.

  • p0d

    @Nate:

Unless its at a lower weight its not likely she’ll miss/ In 8 fights, she’s missed weight twice. Once early in career (vs Sexton) and the other (vs Young) when she had 2 weeks for prep, not that its an excuse. There’s video footage of all her weigh ins, except the 1st fight which was the 1st sanctioned so it was assumably kosher. At her last fight she was 2lbs under. Here’s list of others who have 2 or more fails off the top : Sakurai, Paul Daley, Shana Olsen, Thiago Alves.
